Kentucky Bourbon Affair Brings Axes, Education in 2017

Bourbon

May 24, 2017

Since its founding a few years ago, the Kentucky Bourbon Affair has given whiskey lovers some amazing experiences. This year, it’s June 6-11 and tickets are still available for once-in-a-lifetime events: compete in the Jeptha Games, where folks are throwing axes (seriously, I’m going just to see what happens); pick Russell’s Reserve Rye Barrels with Eddie and Jimmy Russell; or a train ride through Kentucky while you’re sipping Jim Beam.

This year, the Kentucky Bourbon Affair included a single ticket all-day “proof expo,” in which you take elite level classes on bourbon. I’m teaching a class that combines my passions of rum and whiskey. RUM AND WHISKEY: OF LOVE AND WAR digs into how Americans pitted whiskey distillers and rum importers against one another in the 1800s, and whiskey was victorious through legislative efforts. But as you can imagine, the author of three whiskey books and Rum Curious believes there’s space in your cabinet for both rum and whiskey.

The fact that the Kentucky Bourbon Affair is allowing me to present this and taste rare rums to bourbon consumers just shows how much the event organizers care about non-marketing education. Tickets are available at Kentucky Bourbon Affair.

If you care about advancing your bourbon knowledge, you won’t want to miss these June 10:

TASTING THE GRAINS: THE MAGIC OF CORN

By law, Bourbon must be made of at least 51%  corn. But why corn? Of the cereal varieties, corn is not necessarily the most outstanding. Yet, dig a little deeper, and the grain indigenous to Kentucky has a fascinating role to play in the world’s best Bourbon. Join Joyce Nethery of Jeptha Creed Distillery as she discusses the role corn plays in fermentation, distillation, and finished Bourbon, its flavor contributions, and the way heirloom varietals, such as Jeptha Creed’s own Bloody Butcher Corn, can impact the distillate.

MAKE AN OLD FASHIONED – LOUISVILLE’S OFFICIAL COCKTAIL
The Pendennis Club in downtown Louisville has long claimed the invention of the Old Fashioned cocktail in the 1880s. It was popularized by club member and Bourbon distiller Col. James E. Pepper, who would go on to introduce the cocktail to the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, which led to its widespread popularity. In 2015, Louisville’s Mayor declared the Old Fashioned the city’s Official Cocktail, making Louisville only the second city known to have proclaimed an official libation since the Louisiana House of Representatives named the Sazerac New Orleans’ drink of choice in 2008. Perfect your cocktail skills, and enjoy some local lore as you learn the secret to the perfect Old Fashioned.
