March 25, 2021

Highland Park announced a pair of new releases, one a 50-year single malt Scotch whiskey, and the other a single cask release with proceeds to be donated to a COVID emergency response which aids children of first responders.

The new Highland Park 50 Year Old edition began with nine casks originally filled in 1968, bklended in 2008, then re-racked into a handful first-fill, sherry-seasoned oak casks. Then, another dozen years of maturation, one of the casks was selected and blended with a small quantity of the whisky from the last 50 Year Old released by the distillery. The resulting whiskey is just the third 50-year to be released in the distillery’s 223-year history.

The whiskey was bottled at 43.8% ABV. Bottles will be sold in a hand-made wooden box, with an SRP of $30,000.

The single cask release was originally filled in 2008 and left to age for 11 years, then “re-discovered” in 2019, according to a news release from the distillery. This particular cask, No. 150, was chosen after numerous blind-tastings and bottled at cask strength (65.4% alcohol). It yielded 594 bottles, which will be sold at an SRP of $155, with $15,000 from sales to be donated by Highland Park to The First Responders Children’s Foundation COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.

The special single release is available for pre-sale now via Caskers.
