Pre-Pro Old Overholt Brings Big Money

Bourbon

November 5, 2015

The Christie’s auction I covered a few weeks ago brought more than $2.7 million. The collection of Richard Mellon Scaife was 100 percent sold with the top lot being Pétrus 1961, Pomerol, cru exceptionnel, 3 magnums per lot, which realized $67,375.

The 28 lots of pre-prohibition Old Overholt rye whiskey sold for a total of $324,018 with buyers from the USA, UK, Continental Europe and Asia, Christie’s told me. The noted auction house would not release information on the buyers, including if anybody purchased multiple lots.

The highest whiskey lot was $18,375.

Christie’s says additional rare whiskies will be offered at Christie’s New York December 2.
