Tamworth Distilling barrel

New Hampshire-based Tamworth Distilling has a Valentine’s Day offer that almost literally puts a price on love. The question is: Do you feel lucky?

Starting Feb. 14 2023, newlyweds are invited to purchase a barrel (equivalent to 250 bottles!) of unaged scratch-made whiskey from the distillery that will come of age, and appreciate exponentially, over the next 10 years. Once it reaches maturation, couples can take home their custom barrel, which at this point, based on today’s market conditions, could be worth approximately $75,000.

So, what’s the catch? Couples who remain legally married for that 10 years can take home their custom barrel at cost – an immense value and reward for sticking it out all ten years. BUT, if it wasn’t meant to be and purchasers divorce or separate, the barrel must then be forfeited back to Tamworth Distilling.

Quaker City Mercantile, the design agency that owns Tamworth Distilling created globally recognized brands including Hendrick’s GinandSailor Jerry, will work with the newlyweds to design a custom label for their whiskey unique to the couple themselves, starting at $7,000 per barrel (for reference: Quaker City Mercantile standard starting charge for design projects is $25,000). One barrel is equivalent to up to 250 bottles (depending on the Angel’s Share) of whiskey that will come of age in 10 years.

The details: Couples will pay a fee upfront (starts at $7,000) that covers the hard costs of the barrel, the un-aged whiskey, and an annual storage fee (+$300/year) for their barrel, as well as an annual status report on their barrel that includes a photo – the duo can even visit the barrel at the distillery! At the ten-year mark, for a total price of $10,000, the couple will receive 250 bottles of 10-year-old whiskey worth $200 per bottle, plus the $25k worth of label design, yielding a total value of $75,500!

If, after 10 years, the purchasers can prove they are still legally married and together, Tamworth Distilling will bottle the custom whiskey in the unique bottles the couple designed. Unfortunately, if love runs out and the couple divorces (or if a spouse passes away), they forfeit their barrel to the distillery (who will sell it and retain all profits).

Examples of Quaker City Mercantile’s design work can be seen on world-renowned brands including Hendrick’s Gin, Sailor Jerry Rum, Hudson Whiskey, Narragansett as well as breakout brands like The Pathfinder Hemp and Root.
