As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Whiskey JYPSI has announced the release of Legacy Batch 003: The Declaration. 

This, the third limited-edition of the Legacy Series, is a tribute to America’s revolutionary spirit, built from a reconstructed Maryland-style rye mash bill that reinterprets the past with modern craft and reverence.

“Before bourbon there was rye,” Whiskey JYPSI whiskey maker, Ari Sussman, said in a news release. “Rye was the whiskey of revolutionaries, and Maryland Style Rye was what George Washington himself distilled at Mount Vernon. It balanced rye’s characteristic spice with the sweetness of corn, and that balance is what we set out to create.”

Rather than a simple recreation, The Declaration is a modern reimagining of that historical mash bill, blending rare and aged stocks of whiskeys to create a complex and balanced profile. The blend is a meticulous construction of three distinct components:

• 60% Rye: A blend of 8- to 12-year-old 95/5 rye sourced from Indiana, delivering the foundational spice, maturity, and classic rye grain character, which is then finished with a top note from apple brandy barrels sourced directly from Washington’s distillery at Mount Vernon.
• 30% Corn: 20- to 25-year-old Canadian corn whiskey, which was re-barreled in new American oak for two and a half years.
• 10% Malt: An 8-year-old American single malt from Virginia, which provides a fragrant, floral, and biscuit-forward aromatic top note to round out the blend.

“This whiskey is a textbook example of disciplined, perceptive blending, which maintains control of an aroma and flavor channel that never breaches its boundaries,” whiskey blender and spirits author F. Paul Pacult said. “The whiskey’s virtues are always apparent but never exaggerated. It’s compact, strong, and elegant. In a word, superb.”
