On the heels of its “Imaginarium: The Fantastical World of Compass Box and Stranger & Stranger” exhibition, which opened during Art Basel, Compass Box Scotch Whisky  achieved a milestone result at auction. 

In partnership with Boston’s Bonhams Auction House, the whiskymaker’s one-of-one CONFLUENCE expression, which brings together Scottish and Swedish whiskies in a unique blend that reflects the heritage of new Creative Director of Whiskymaking, Angela D’Orazio, sold for $22,500, more than doubling its estimate of $10,000.

“This remarkable achievement reflects the voracious appetite for whisky that stands out from the crowd, bringing together exceptional whiskymaking skill with imagination and creativity – the foundation that Compass Box is built on,” Racheal Vaughan Jones, Compass Box Chief Marketing Officer, said in a news release. “We’re always seeking to make the world of whisky more interesting, and nothing embodies that more than CONFLUENCE, created by our new Creative Director of Whiskymaking, as well as our archives of distinctive whiskies created over the past 25 years.”

The Art & Alchemy of Spirits auction, presented by Compass Box to benefit The Wolfsonian-Florida International University Museum, ran online November 26–December 10. Alongside CONFLUENCE, the collaboration featured seven additional lots taken from the brand’s archive, ranging from iconic classics to new releases and rare, limited editions, all of which were offered without reserve and totalled $54,000. 

Net proceeds will benefit educational programming and future exhibitions at The Wolfsonian–FIU, a Miami Beach-based museum, library, and research center dedicated to exploring the persuasive power of art and design.

For 25 years, Compass Box has redefined Scotch whisky through creativity and transparency, earning acclaim for its innovative blends and collaborations that invite drinkers on an experiential journey from bottle label to the liquid in the bottle.

Building on this legacy of innovation, D’Orazio, who was named World Whiskies Awards ‘Whisky Legend’ and 2019 Whisky Hall of Famer and took the whiskymaking lead at Compass Box earlier this year, brought together her Swedish heritage and tenure at Mackmyra Distillery and Scottish passions to create CONFLUENCE, which features component whiskies from Mackmyra, Macallan, Glen Moray, Miltonduff and Teaninich Distilleries. 

Uniting the complexities of Scotch and Swedish whisky in a groundbreaking expression of artistry and innovation, the blend embodies the Compass Box mission to challenge convention and push the boundaries of whiskymaking.

Adding to the bottle’s uniqueness, London-based contemporary artist Mary West, renowned for her stylized landscape paintings, created an exclusive label that blends abstract and figurative elements to evoke landscapes of Scotland and Sweden. Completing the bottle’s presentation, Scottish woodworker Duncan Legate, who specializes in hand-made live edge furniture, crafted a bespoke Scottish timber display, where natural imperfections are hero-ed to echo the interplay of terroirs.

The additional Compass Box auction offerings were:

• Compass Box The Second Decade, secured $7,500 (estimated at $2,400-$3,200)
• Compass Box ‘The General’, secured $4,750 (estimated at $3,000-$4,000)
• Compass Box The First Decade, secured $4,000 (estimated at $2,200-$2,800)
• Compass Box Hedonism Collection, secured $3,500 (estimated at $2,200-$2,800)
• Compass Box The Last Vatted Collection, secured $1,875 (estimated at $500-$650)
• Compass Box No Name Collection, secured $1,875 (estimated at $400-$500)

Overlapping with the auction, the month-long retrospective exhibition Imaginarium: The Fantastical World of Compass Box and Stranger & Stranger debuted on December 3 at The Wolfsonian-FIU, will display Compass Box’s 25-year journey of creativity and design through an immersive showcase of its most iconic whiskies through to January 4, 2026. The exhibition will then go on an international tour to London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
