Garrison Brothers Hye-Rye-bottle with barrels

Garrison Brothers announced its first pre-sale opportunity for Hye Rye Bourbon Whiskey, one of the distillery’s most coveted and hardest-to-find releases. Hye Rye first debuted on December 5, 2020, in recognition of the 87th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition in America and in celebration of founder Dan Garrison’s birthday. That first release was available only at the distillery and yielded 1,000 bottles, each priced at $99.99.

This limited-run expression is expected to be a 98-proof rye bourbon whiskey that honors rye’s deep roots in American distilling history. Often known as the “flavor grain,” rye contributes spice, savory depth, and complexity to whiskey. Rye whiskey has been distilled in America since the late 1700s.

For Garrison Brothers, the production of Hye Rye dates back to 2012, when Master Distiller Donnis Todd sourced several hundred bags of organic rye from Justin Crownover’s Lonestar Family Farms in Sunray, Texas. His goal was to create a sweet mash bill of 52% South Texas corn, 37% organic rye, and 11% barley. Todd aged the test barrels for two years, tasting them at six-month intervals to assess flavor development.

Although he was pleased with Hye Rye’s early aging progress, Todd wanted a more robust flavor profile and decided to mature the bourbon for five additional years. In the summer of 2015, Todd and his production team strategically placed 14 barrels in rickhouses throughout the ranch to allow the flavors to continue evolving.

“When we filled the first Hye Rye barrels, I had no idea it would become one of the most talked-about bourbons we’ve ever made,” Todd said in a news release. “It tested us from the first grain delivery to the day we finally bottled it, but every obstacle made us more determined to get it right. Bringing Hye Rye back means so much to me. It’s the continuation of a story that’s been years in the making.”

Garrison Brothers Hye Rye delivers a richer, spicier take on Texas bourbon. Bourbons made with a higher percentage of rye are celebrated for their bold spice, peppery character, and layered complexity, and are often referred to as “high-rye” bourbons. Hye Rye is a Texas bourbon with an unmistakable kick.
