KDA Honors Chris Morris with Lifetime Board Member Award
The Kentucky Distillers’ Association Board of Directors has honored Chris Morris, the esteemed Master Distiller Emeritus at Brown-Forman Corp., with its rare “Lifetime Honorary Board Member” designation along with a new endowed scholarship in his name.
Mr. Morris, 68, this year celebrated 50 years of distinguished service to the Bourbon and distilled spirits industry, and recently announced he was stepping down as a KDA Board member after 20 years of leadership.
He is only the eighth person to ever receive the prestigious “Lifetime Honorary Member” title.
“Chris has dedicated his career to advancing Kentucky Bourbon through innovation, integrity, and collaboration,” KDA President Eric Gregory said in a news release.”His contributions to the KDA have been extraordinary and transformative, for which we owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude.
“Chris has been a steady, trusted leader and a respected voice on our board for two decades. His calm demeanor, thoughtful perspective and collaborative approach have made him someone people turn to for guidance. His leadership has made a lasting difference for the KDA and Kentucky Bourbon, and this honor is a fitting recognition of that legacy.”
Morris said, “It has been an honor to represent Brown-Forman on the Kentucky Distillers’ Association’s Board these many years. During that time the association has expanded its membership, strengthened the Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience and led the modernization of many of the Commonwealth’s spirits regulations. This has been accomplished by the member companies working together for the good of all.”
KDA Board Chair Gigi DaDan declared that the “KDA Chris Morris Distillation Excellence” scholarship will be given every year to a student in the Distillation, Wine and Brewing program at the University of Kentucky’s Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
Preference will be given to students pursuing spirits research initiatives or demonstrating an interest in the history of Bourbon, spirits and distillation, as Mr. Morris is widely recognized and respected as one of Bourbon’s chief historians.
“The KDA has long understood that the future of Kentucky’s distilling industry depends on investing in the next generation,” DaDan said. “Chris has dedicated his career to sharing his knowledge, championing innovation and mentoring the next generation of industry leaders. This scholarship is a fitting tribute to his legacy and a way to ensure his passion for Kentucky’s distilling heritage continues to inspire future generations.”
The honor took place earlier this month at a special meeting of the KDA Board at Brown-Forman’s headquarters in Louisville, attended by top company executives, Bourbon legends, Master Distiller colleagues, and more industry luminaries.
Marshall Farrer, Chairman of the Brown-Forman Board of Directors, said: “Chris’s impact on the distilling industry is immeasurable. Over his five decades of dedication, he has set the standard for craftsmanship, stewardship, and visionary leadership. His commitment to protecting and expanding Kentucky Bourbon’s global presence while lifting up the next generation of distillers reflects the very best of our industry. We are deeply grateful for his 20 years of transformative leadership on the KDA Board and join in celebrating this well-deserved honor.”
The KDA Board unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Morris. Fellow Lifetime Honorees Bill Samuels, Jr., of Maker’s Mark and John Rhea of Four Roses Distillery presented him a gold-framed version of the resolution, and UK leaders gifted a vase recognizing the scholarship.
The Board’s resolution saluted Morris for his extraordinary service to Kentucky Bourbon, the KDA, the Commonwealth and the nation, as well as his contributions as a distiller, innovator, educator, historian and mentor.
Mr. Morris first joined the KDA family in 1991 on its Marketing Committee that later oversaw the creation of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tourism attraction, and was appointed Director for Brown-Forman in April 2007.
He is the only person this century to serve three terms as Chairman of the KDA Board, and also has served in every KDA Board leadership role including Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Immediate Past Chairman over the last two decades.
He also has served as Chairman of the KDA Bylaws Committee, Chairman of the Membership Standards Advisory Group, and as the only Governor of the Order of the Writ – Spirit of Kentucky Bourbon Society, which he helped found in 2015.
The resolution noted that many of the industry’s most celebrated achievements occurred during his terms as Chairman, including the addition of Craft members to the organization, sweeping tourism reforms that elevated the KBT to Napa Valley status, and passage of the landmark phaseout of the barrel tax that the KDA had been working to resolve for 75 years.
His accomplishments have earned numerous honors, including induction into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2017, the Parker Beam Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame, the Keeper of the Quaich and the first Kentucky distiller inducted into the Worshipful Company of Distillers.
With the award, Mr. Morris joins an exclusive club of industry titans, including:
Elizabeth McCall, Morris’ protégé and successor as Master Distiller at Brown-Forman, closed the ceremony with a heartfelt toast to her mentor. “Your legacy is found not only in the whiskey you’ve created, but in the people you’ve inspired,” McCall said.
