Whiskey Sour cocktail

In a recent YouTube video, Fred Minnick takes the handoff from a story about Whiskey Sours to outline what he believes are the best bourbons for making the classic cocktail.

The article, titled “The Best Bourbons for Whiskey Sours, According to Bartenders,” which was published by Food & Wine, prompted Fred to chime in on the cocktail Fred believes is a perfect fall/winter sipper. Here are his reactions to Food & Wine’s choices:

Michter’s US-1 Bourbon: “Absolutely love this,” Fred says. “This is a home run for me. One thousand percent agree. This makes probably the best Whiskey Sour for those who like to sip it throughout the night.” He said this is an especially good choice for those who aren’t looking to use a high-proof whiskey in their cocktail. Fred added that if you walk into a bar and they have this Michter’s expression, you can tell they’re serious about their bourbon.

Buffalo Trace Bourbon: “I actually disagree with this,” Fred says. In fact, he says, he doesn’t like Buffalo Trace in any cocktail. “I get this granular wood taste that I don’t get in the whiskey by itself.”

Pinhook Bourbon: “I’m going to say I’m kind of, like, indifferent on this,” Fred says. “Pinhook, to me, is not as consistent as Buffalo Trace or Michter’s US-1. I do like something I get a lot of consistency out of. Pinhook seems to have a lot of limited editions that they put out. I’m not saying no on this, but I’m also not saying I’m jumping up and down for Pinhook in my Whiskey Sour.”

Doc Swinson’s: “Fascinating pick,” Fred says. “I actually like the pick a lot, but Doc Swinson’s has a lot of different products, and they do a lot of barrel finishes, and they’re great blenders.” But for cocktails? Fred defers. “I don’t think I’ve ever made a cocktail with their stuff.”

Booker’s Bourbon: “So, here it is, here’s the truth,” Fred says. “This is the No. 1 bourbon in my household for my wife’s whiskey cocktails. She want’s Booker’s in everything. If she’s having a New York Sour, a Whiskey Sour, if she’s having a Brown Derby. Whatever she’s having, she wants it to be Booker’s — or Old Forester 1920. So, I happen to have a ton of experience making Whiskey Sours with Booker’s, and you know what? It’s absolutely awesome, but it’s also extremely potent.” Fred explains that he may or may not at times drink his cocktails quickly — and if that happens, Booker’s is going to take him to the edge pretty quickly. “And I don’t want that,” he says. “Be mindful of how high that proof is, because it’s packing some heat.”
