Father’s Day Pick: BBC Discovery Series Batch 2

Bourbon

June 10, 2020

Father’s Day is one of the holidays that irks me when it comes to gift buying.

What happens is you have people searching for Blanton’s, Weller, Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch, King of Kentucky, etc., and they settle for everyday bourbons. I usually tell people to buy store picks for Father’s Day.

But that rarely leaves an eager-to-please spouse excited about their gift pursuit. No, they want to nail the bourbon pick, so they can see the twinkle in their husband’s or father’s eyes. Simply put, Father’s Day falls in the middle of the year, when the limited edition releases are not out yet and not much of noteworthy status is available.

This year, I think there’s a bourbon (a blend of straight bourbons) available that punches in the same weight as some of the great limited editions hitting in the fall. It’s Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Discovery Series Batch 2. Some 1,400 cases are in the market and it’s available online at Seelbach’s.

See my review on YouTube.

The blend of 17 percent 14-year Kentucky bourbon, 39 percent 12-year Kentucky bourbon and 44 percent 10-year Kentucky bourbon is 121.21 proof at $120+. Its beautiful notes of cracker jacks, caramel, cardamom and marzipan really shine. But what makes this bourbon so unique for me is it’s incredibly long finish.

I had also recently tasted this in a YouTuber member’s-only taste off and it took second, losing out to Parker’s Heritage 11-year-old from 2017. Which, that’s a tough one to beat!
