Fred Minnick’s Top 5 Bourbons for Beginners
Fred Minnick has released a new video designed to get newcomers started in their whiskey journey: “Top 5 Bourbons for Beginners.”
Taking a break from his book tour in support of his new release, Bottom Shelf, Fred leads off by saying the brands hate being called “starter bourbons.” Why? Because they know that as soon as that beginner is no longer a beginner, they are going to move onto other whiskeys.
Hey, it happens.
Some criteria, per Fred: It should be affordable; it should be at a reasonable proof (90-100), and it should be enjoyable neat or over ice;
Anyway, here are Fred’s top 5 Bourbons for Beginners. Watch the full video below for Fred’s full breakdown and comments on each.
5. Michter’s US-1: Under $60. “What I like about it is that it has a lot of flavor for that 90-proof range.”
4. Four Roses Small Batch: Brings a lot of flavors for the 90-proof range. “I really do believe that Four Roses makes great whiskey. … From a starter perspective, you are going to know what a high-rye bourbon tastes like with Four Roses Small Batch.”
3. Evan Williams Bottled in Bond: One of Fred’s longstanding favorites. It’s aged four years and bottled, of course, at 100 proof. And for the beginners, it’s a chance to learn a bit of bourbon history, as the Bottled in Bond Act dates back to 1897. Plus? It’s CHEAP.
2. Woodford Reserve: Fred says this is the bourbon some people believe is expensive and one of the greatest bourbons in the world – but it’s actually affordable and available. It’s a good and consistent bourbon, but it’s not fancy and perfect for beginners.
1. Maker’s Mark: Gotta love a wheated bourbon. “This is absolutely one of the best bourbons there is for pairing with food,” Fred says. Think barbecue. And who doesn’t love barbecue? Drink it neat, over ice or in a cocktail, and you won’t be disappointed.
