House of Rare Tequila announced the launch of RAREcask Genesis PX (46% ABV, 750ml, $229.99 SRP), arriving in markets imminently. RAREcask Genesis PX is the inaugural expression of the RAREcask series, which is the first dedicated aging program in tequila. 

Mexico City-based founder Miguel Ortiz created the RAREcask series inspired by his deep passion for Scotch whisky and his professional experience in the private barrel business. RAREcask Genesis PX marks the first commercially released expression in the series, offered in 1,000-bottle lots.  

Originally distilled at the Arette Distillery, this extra anejo was fermented with wild yeast and aged three years in ex-bourbon barrels before finishing for at least three months in Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry casks, with each lot resting in the PX barrels for a different duration. PX sherry casks have become the foundation of House of Rare’s aged expressions, shaping this release as well as the brand’s broader portfolio. 

“With RAREcask, we saw an opportunity to expand the boundaries of tequila by applying the depth and discipline of aging techniques typically reserved for Scotch,” Ortiz said in a news release. “The use of PX casks is a purposeful choice – one that transforms the tequila, layering in distinctive richness, texture and complexity.”  

Originally established in 2022, House of Rare’s RAREcask program includes barrel aging curation for serious collectors. The program represents collaborations with Mexico’s finest distilleries producing the tequila and premium casks used for aging – such as French oak, Umeshu, Calvados, cognac, as well as Islay and Highland Scotch barrels. 

To date, House of Rare has sold more than 20 editions from distilleries, including Cascahuin, Atanasio, Real Matatl (mezcal) and Arette. House of Rare prioritizes cask freshness, often draining barrels on demand and refilling them with tequila within a week to preserve the integrity of the wood’s previous contents. These RAREcask barrels will ultimately mature in a state-of-the art aging cellar currently in development on the Herencia de Agaves property, designed by architect Ted Givens.  

RAREcask Genesis PX joins House of Rare’s Limited-Edition Range, which also includes Founder’s Cut, the first tequila released after the acquisition of Herencia de Agaves distillery. RAREcask Genesis PX is available online and in stores in California, New York and Florida.
